Fingerspelling is the use of both hands, using different positions and handshapes to form the 26 letters of the alphabet in BSL
Think of one hand as a piece of paper and the other hand as a pen, use your dominated hand as the pen hand.
Some people find finger-spelling difficult but remember practice makes prefect.
In early childhood we all go through the process of learning the individual letters of small words e.g C-A-T, D-O-G, B-A-L-L and also learn to spell our names. We start by learning each individual letter.
Try to relax when you are finer-spelling don't get stressed or anixous and look for 'pattern on the hand'
The flow of letters should be as steady and smooth as possible so that the patterns can be clearly seen.
Remember all the vowels 'a-e-i-o-u' are on a sequences of one hand.
Keep letters (handshapes) in close proximity
If you are finger-spelling 2 or more words or your first name and surname leave a small gap between words, a bit like a pause between words when you are speaking.
After a few practices of the alphabet and finger-spelling your name, try pronouncing your name at the same time as finger.
